Make sure that you get your first basic quests out the way and find yourself somewhere to hide out and setup for the first 7 days, do small clear quests and loot your brains out to try and get what you will need to defend yourself.
There is nothing like being out in the open with a spear on the first horde night, I personally myself have done the first 7 days with only a torch but set myself up so i had enough defences to help me get through the night.
